What is immersive media? “So much,” says one student. “If it tells a story, shares a message, or brings people together in a creative way, it qualifies as immersive media.”

Students in the Immersive Media program collaborated with the Chatham Archives to bring history to life through virtual reality this past semester. From programs that place a user into historic Chatham photographs to 3D projections of artifacts, the students each brought their unique interests to the project. Launched in 2019 with the support of the McElhattan Foundation, Chatham’s new Bachelor of Arts in Immersive Media (IMM) program is the first in the world of its kind: an undergraduate degree focused on creating content for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) that goes beyond gaming, broadly covering other applications as well.
