As we near the end of National Mentorship Month, we wanted to highlight the impact that alumni mentorship can have on our current students. We caught up with longtime doctor and public speaker, Dr. Lynette Charity, and her Welcome Aboard mentee and aspiring doctor, Ashley Pesarick to learn more about how their relationship has impacted them both.

“That’s just a part of who we are, a community-based institution supported by alumni who used to walk in the same shoes as the current students.” We sat down with Katie Thoma, the head of the Welcome Aboard program and Chatham Connect, to discuss how these unique programs offer Chatham students mentorship opportunities like no other.

Leah Johnson has been Komal Kaur’s mentor since her first day at Chatham thanks to the RISE Program. RISE (Retain. Involve. Strengthen. Excel) is a program designed by students of color and the Office of Student Affairs to help ensure the support and success of students of color on Chatham’s campus. When she arrived at Chatham as a first year four years ago, Elana Ragan needed help navigating the path towards becoming a teacher. She found that in Chatham’s Welcome Aboard Mentorship program. Now, as an alumna, she is paying it forward and guiding a mentee of her own.
